Clearing for building
Clearing a building envelope means removing what is in the way of construction and access, and doing it without wrecking the ground you are about to build on.
Stumps are the part people underestimate. Left in place under a pad or a driveway they decompose and leave a void, and the settlement arrives after everything above it is finished. Ground out or removed, depending on what is going over the top.
Defensible space
Living in the pines in central Oregon means wildfire clearance is a permanent condition of the property rather than a one-time task. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and insurer, and they have been getting more specific.
The work generally means separating the ground fuels from the structure, breaking up continuous brush, limbing up so fire cannot climb from the ground into the canopy, and keeping the immediate perimeter clear.
It is worth doing deliberately in a season when the machine can get where it needs to go, rather than in a hurry the week before an inspection or a policy renewal.
Selective clearing
Clearing everything is rarely the goal. Most properties want the hazardous and crowded material out and the good trees kept, which means deciding tree by tree rather than running a machine through.
Established trees on a central Oregon lot are worth real money and take decades to replace. Removing the wrong ones is not reversible.
What happens to the material
Slash, brush, and stumps have to go somewhere. Depending on the site and the volume that means chipping, hauling off, or piling for later disposal.
Leaving a slash pile on a property in fire country is trading one problem for a different one. Worth deciding at the estimate stage rather than at the end.
